Thanksgiving Journey Through Data: Final Day (Black Friday & Friendsgiving)

As we wrap up our Thanksgiving campaign, Day 5 focuses on the heart of the season: travel, Friendsgiving gatherings, and Black Friday adventures. Whether braving the holiday rush to see loved ones or finding the best deals, Thanksgiving is about creating connections and traditions.

A big thank you to our readers for joining us on this journey—and to Querri, our trusted companion, for making data exploration simple, fun, and insightful. From all of us, here’s to a holiday season filled with gratitude, joy, and a little data magic! 🦃

5-days of Thanksgiving

Querri is thrilled to take our readers on a 5-day Thanksgiving journey Through Data. We'll travel back in time to uncover what was on America’s plate that Thanksgiving night in 2015. Here is a list of what we will cover over the next 5 days:

  • Day 1: Exploration of the Survey participants —who they are, where they’re from, and how they are distributed throughout the country. (Read here.)
  • Day 2: Sweet tooth alert! 🍰 Dive into America’s dessert favorites and regional pie debates. (Read here.)
  • Day 3: Sides steal the show. 🥗 From stuffing to green bean casserole, we’ll uncover the sides that bring families together. (Read here.)
  • Day 4: The main event: Turkey vs. alternatives—what was trending and who was replacing turkey with other alternatives. (Read here.)
  • Day 5: Beyond the table—Black Friday shopping trends and the growing popularity of Friendsgiving a decade ago

The Dataset

This dataset is mainly about the food on the table, but there is also great information about people. 1058 people responded to the 538 Thanksgiving Dinner survey conducted in 2015. They were from all over the country. The list of survey questions can be viewed at the link above.

We wanted to see how many people participated in the Black Friday shopping across the country. We asked Querri to "Visualize Black Friday participants by region," and a nice bar graph was shown to us.

Travel Habits for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Next, we explored how far respondents were willing to travel for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. A decade ago, many opted to stay home, likely due to the hassle of parking and the limited availability of ride-sharing options like Uber and Lyft. However, travel trends have evolved, offering insights into shifting priorities for holiday celebrations.

Friendsgiving Across the Regions

Friendsgiving has become a beloved Thanksgiving tradition, and regions like Mountain, Pacific, and West South Central led the trend with the highest participation rates. This data highlighted how different areas embrace new traditions while staying connected to the holiday’s communal spirit.

The Power of Automation

Over the past five days, we have cleaned, explored, analyzed, and visualized data. Imagine doing this every day—wouldn’t it get tedious? Querri eliminates the drudgery by enabling automation for repetitive tasks. You can automate workflows to run daily, weekly, or monthly. The best part? As your data refreshes, so do the results of your automated processes, effortlessly keeping everything up-to-date.

Oh, the joy of Friendsgiving, so delightful and grand,
Where the turkey and pies are lovingly planned.
In a suburban setting, or urban and rural,
Laughter and stories begin to unfurl.

Around the table, there's fun and no fuss,
A gathering of friends, just being _us_.
Community types unite for this wonderful cause,
Sharing sweet desserts and giving thanks without pause.

Turkey, Turducken—which will it be?
Roasted, baked, fried—oh, the glee!
With Brussel sprouts, Carrots, and more to abound,
Mashed potatoes and rolls make a comforting mound.

The pies sit pretty, from Apple to Pecan,
While Pumpkin and Cherry glow like the sun.
A slice of Chocolate and perhaps Coconut cream,
For at Friendsgiving, indulgence is no dream.

Let's not forget our sweet desserts piled high,
Cheesecake and Cookies, Ice cream on the sly.
Peach cobbler hides beneath some Fudge,
As sticky Carrot cake gives our taste buds a nudge.

Even though black Friday may soon descend,
For now, it's all about being with friends.
Whether we're young, old, or just in between,
Friendsgiving's the time for our perfect scene.

Lastly, remember when it's all said and done,
Friendsgiving's about laughter, endless and fun.
So raise your glass high with a formidable cheer,
Here's to friendship and feasting, the best of the year! 🎉🍗🥧
