The Analyst: Writing Code for You

The Researcher uses a preview-then-execute workflow to protect you from committing to the wrong approach on thousands of rows. It processes a 30-row sample first, so you can review the results and refine your instructions before running the full dataset. The Categorize Tool: Discovering Themes You Didn't Know to Look For

While the Researcher excels when you know what you're looking for, many of the most valuable insights in a dataset are the ones you didn't know were there. That's where The Categorize Tool comes in.

Rather than applying categories you define, Categorize analyzes your text data and automatically finds the natural groupings within it — using semantic clustering to understand meaning, not just keywords. It then generates clear, human-readable labels for each group. This is the right tool when you're staring at a column of open-ended responses and asking, "What's actually in here?"

When to use it:

  • "What topics are customers bringing up in these reviews?"
  • "What kinds of issues are showing up in our support tickets?"
  • "What are people asking about in these survey responses?"
  • "What types of feature requests are we getting?"

How it works:

Categorize runs a two-phase process. First, it analyzes a sample of your data and presents three levels of granularity to choose from — Broad (10–15 high-level themes), Medium (30–80 topic areas), or Specific (fine-grained with sub-categories). Each option is described based on your actual data, so you're choosing between real themes, not generic placeholders.

Once you select a level, it processes your full dataset and adds new columns: a category label for each row, a confidence score (0–1) showing how cleanly the row fits its assigned group, and an estimated flag for any rows that were ambiguous. From there, your data is immediately ready for analysis — "Show a bar chart of ticket count by theme" or "What's the average score per category?"

A common workflow is to use Categorize first to discover what themes exist, then hand those categories to the Researcher to apply a clean, consistent classification across your full dataset.
